On March 11, 1973, WVIT’s first transmission was on-aired as the second network between Richmond and Roanoke which makes the first television originally based in Charlottesville. Waterman Broadcasting decided to buy the network in 1986 along with other television assets from the previous owner. In the Charlottesville market, it was the only full-power network in the market and associated with major outlets along with cable transmission and over-the-air services for other outside stations in the United States.

On August 15, 2004, WCAV signed on and become the area first CBS affiliated network which is later become a challenge for WVIT in the broadcasting market. After transitioning from analog to digital service by Federal Communications Commission, the stations were required to broadcast instructional video loop on digital converter box which cost an estimated 20,000 dollars.
