CBS association with other networks was not considered for the area of Charlottesville which came in the Eastern Time Zone. In the early days, CBS programming was on-aired by cable from WTVR and Washington-based WUSA network. On the local cable system, WUSA was immediately replaced by WCAVWCAV CBS 19 after its launching in the market.

During WCAV CBS 19 signed on, Gray Television bought the WVAW a low-powered ABC associated network at the same time. This network was operating as a translator of WHSV for Harrisonburg and through a cable system, it went move to the Charlottesville area. During 2005 WAHU class A network joined with both of the broadcasting groups under an agreement. University of Virginia sports programming was one-ired officially from these three networks since 2006. WAHU Fox 27 decided to simulcast its transmission in high resolution on WCAV CBS 19 on June 17, 2013, for the specific targeted market. And a couple of years later Ion Television has transmitted its commercial and another programming on 19.4.

On March 4, 2019, Lockwood Broadcast Group acquired the WVAW and WCAV from Gray Television. After this sale simultaneously, Gray gets the WVIR from the owner Waterman Broadcasting. The affiliation with Me Tv Network and Fox was not included in the sale of the network and was later used by WAHU after acquiring by Gray as a sister station. WAHU studio facility and other broadcasting assets were moved from the commonplace which was shared with WCAV. This sale deed was completed on October 1 in the following year.
