On November 15, 1953, its first market-based transmission was launched as an official television station and become the first Topeka television network and third source in the market of Kansas which was already served by the transmitter on Overland Park. KCTY television went on-aired in June 1953. KTVH and Channel 13 were launched on the same date which belonged to Wichita and is presently known in the market as KWCH-DT.

These changes made the station to be the second source of programming in Kansas and it was previously operated from the base in west Topeka and other technical facilities are arranged beside Menninger Clinic. This control room was commonly used by WIBW radio broadcasting and a fire occurred in which the entire facility was destroyed on January 5, 2012. Kansas Senator Arthur Capper was the founder of channel 13 and has a working partnership with Topeka Daily Capital as well as WIBW radio broadcasting services.
