On December 11, 1952, start functioning its transmission as WSLS-TV by the owner of Shenandoah Life Insurance Company, and call letters were taken from this company name.
WSLS also brought a working partnership with Roanoke radio stations which were WSLS 610 AM and WSLS 99.1 FM. Channel 10 ownership rights were granted after a competitive contest between Shenandoah and two other stations WROV and WDBJ. WSLA-TV shifted its old building from the first street to the third street in 1955.
