KGET television is dually associated with CW+ and NBC network and channel 17 is operated in virtual mode along with digital UHF channel 25. Nexstar Media Group is the present owner and has a working partnership with KKEY television which is a low-powered transmitted network. In Downtown of Bakersfield on L street have the operational premises and transmitter tower of both stations is installed on highly elevated Mount Adelaide. KGET NBC 17 was originally founded by Ed Urner which was an entrepreneur and on November 8, 1959, with first time transmitted in the area with the name of KLYD and had ABC affiliation at that time.
The first studio facility was constructed in Bakersfield on Eye Street. KLYD radio transmission was serving the area which makes it the first television network in the area with having day time radio transmission.
In 1962 Dellar Broadcasting acquired the station from Urner and call signs were changed to KJTV in 1969. In the same year, it was sold to Atlantic States Industries and on August 5, 1974, KBAK become its sister network which replaced and start having affiliation with the CBS network. In 1978 it was again sold to George N. Gillet which is the owner of Gillet Broadcasting and this deal caused to change of its call signs to KPWR and was officially announced on September 27, 1978. KJTV call letters were used by Fox-affiliated networks in the area of Lubbock and Amarillo, Texas.

On February 1, 1984, Auckerley group acquired the broadcasting assets and KGET call signs were finalized for its transmission services. At that time, it was carrying major networks affiliations as primary in the United States market. After the relocation of its studios and offices from eye street to the present L street, Clear Channel Communications decided to buy in 2001. Vice president and General manager of KGET NBC 17 Ray Watson which was awarded for the Kem County Board of Supervisors in 2002 and Derek Jeffery replaced him later as Manager of KGET. Providence equity partners were controlling Newport Television and made an agreement with Clear Channel for getting its entire television networks on April 20, 2007.
Viewership of KGET:
Bakersfield was not able to hold duopoly operations in legal ways during five stations was operating at that time with full power transmission. On March 14, 2008, Federal Communications Commission approved the sale under some conditions in which Providence Equity Partners have to sell KGET or other assets which were invested in Univision. Due to the ownership conflict from FCC, High Plains Broadcasting bought the KGET along with five other stations from Newport Television in May 2008. Operational activities of KGET were supervised and controlled by Newport under a shared services agreement.
