In October 1953 Valley Telecasting submit an application for granting KYMA NBC 11 and it become the first television channel in the city. KYAT on channel 13 construction application was submitted from Wrather-Alvarez Broadcasting which was the owner of KFMB-TV based in San Diego. But the application was declined by Federal Communications Commission. Yuma was the one-station area for more than eight years during 1961.
A construction application was submitted for channel 13 from Robert Crites which was owning the radio channel KBLU on November 30, 1961. A month earlier New England Industries submitted the application for granting the same KYMA NBC 11 but Federal Communications Commission denied their application and Desert telecasting and KBLU start broadcasting.

The operational activity was a little hard because KIVA and other market-based television channels were agreed about the market capacity Merrill filed petitions for getting some extra time to construct the channel on November 2, 1963, start its transmission after receiving a notice period from the designated authority. Expansion of area coverage to the El Centro with increasing power and transmitter location was changed to the 45 km Northwest of Yuma atop Black Mountain.
Viewership of KYMA:
Imperial Valley was getting sufficient signals after the construction of the studio facility and offices in El Centro. Karl Eller bought the channel from Desert Telecasting on December 7, 1966. Crites was controlling the operational activities of the channel as president of Eller Telecasting. Combined Communications in 1968 acquire the KBLU-TV and KTAR start merging its broadcasting with Eller Outdoor Advertising Company. KIVA studio premises was controlled by KBLU which immediately got the NBC association.
