Publishers of Bluefield Daily Telegraph bought WBTW CBS 13 from Jefferson Standard which was also acquired the WHIS television and radio channels in Bluefield. An overlapping was occurred on WBTV and WBTW due to Grade B signals which were not sufficient enough to expand its services. Radio personalities were carrying television programs about news, sports, and weather segments from the Shott family which was having WBTW ownership. The current transmitter tower of WBTW CBS 13 helps to increase the signal strength to the far North of the Fayetteville and Pinehurst region. In the 1980s and 90s, WBTW was not served by other market-based providers.

WBTW CBS 13 was only the commercial television channel between Wilmington and Charleston areas. Federal Communications Commission has shuffled market-based VHF channels which have limitations of two VHF channels.
