The founder of the station was WCAX radio broadcasting and channel 3 become the oldest station in the Vermont area. On May 20, 1922, it was launched by the students of the University of Vermont as an experimental outlet and two years later on October 10, it was serving the entire broadcasting market as an official outlet.
Burlington Daily News announced to acquired the radio assets of WCAX from the University of Vermont in 1931 and the publishing division was acquired in 1939 by Charles P, Hasbrook and later WCAX started operational activities in 1941. They decided to launch the first transmission service of the station on September 26, 1954, under call signs of WMVT which have licensed for the services in the area of Montpelier. After switching the tower location of channel 3 in December 1954, WCAX Broadcasting Corporation decided to change its name to Mount Mansfield Corporation.

The community of license for WMVT was shifted in May 1955 to Burlington and it was earlier appointed to the Montpelier which was the state largest city in the United States. WCAX-TV call signs were adopted by the ownership and Hasbrook son Dr. Stuart who was by profession an engineer and helped his dad to life the station up in the market. In 1963, the WCAX radio broadcasting unit was sold out by Red Martin which is currently owned as WVMT. It was become the third television station in the market in September 1965 with transmission services in color mode. CBS affiliation was carried out by the WCAX under CBS Radio affiliation which was adopted from the 1940s.
