The first broadcasting operation was launched from WDBJ-TV on October 3, 1955, and at that time the channel was acquired by Times-World Corporation which was the publishing firm of Roanoke Times and Roanoke World-News. This group also owned two radio stations in the market which is WFIR 960 AM and WSLC-FM 94.9. CBS affiliation was carried out in the entire history of WDBJ along with Radio stations affiliations with CBS Radio Network. WSLS channel 10 and WROV 27 were operated in the market of Roanoke when WDBJ-TV also start its operation activities and become the third television station in the market.

Lynchburg-based WSET-TV channel 13 was carrying the CBS programming before WDBJ CBS 7 was entering the broadcasting industry. NTA Film Network and WDBJ were in a working venture in detail during the 1950s. Times World and owner of WROV-TV was the strong participant in getting construction permit and surrender their UHF channel license for getting WDBJ 7. Schurz Communication bought the channel which is Indiana-based after the conflict occurs in the merging of Times World and Landmark Communications in 1969. Radio stations of WDBJ were also sold to different groups. A new facility was constructed with changes in designed and high-resolution broadcasting services in Northwest of Roanoke and begin its transmission on April 20, 2002. Gray Television bought the WDBJ and other radio stations for Schurz Communications on September 14, 2015, and Federal Communication Commission sealed the deal between these two media groups.
