On January 24, 1966, WDIO begin its first-ever transmission and become the area first television that serve broadcasting in color. ABC affiliation was immediately adopted by the network which had a KDAL joint venture with CBS network and serving the relevant programming. Frank Befera was the actual founder of the network while he already owned the radio broadcasting assets in northeastern Minnesota. On August 31, 1967, WIRT went on-aired as an official television outlet in the market. In 1977, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich decided to acquire channels 10 and 13 from the Befera and he remained president and general manager of the television network.

During his retirement year, Hubbard Broadcasting announced to buy the network from HBJ in 1986 and they used the same old logo in the transmission until 2019. Ion Television programming was added from WDIO at the end of September 2017 as the third subchannel and MeTV was replaced by RTV on November 28, 2011. The branding of the outlet was changed to Eyewitness News while it was being used and well known in the market as Action news during the 1970s. The same branding was shared and used by working partner KSTP which is based in Minneapolis, Saint Paul. Music themes and graphic contents were separately used by the WDIO television in the designated market of broadcasting.
