On October 2, 1955, its first official transmission was on-aired with having call letters of WHTN-TV and it was primarily associated with the ABC network. The founder of this television network was Greater Huntington Theater Corporation.
Cowles Communications announced to bought WHTN station after a year of launch and it also had some publishing firms under their possession. In 1958 affiliations were switched in which WHTN television station gets CBS network and took from WCHS. Reeves Telecom announced to bought CBS 13 from Cowles which was done in 1960 and ready to get attached with ABC network more than 24 years.

It was later acquired by Gateway Communications which was developed by former team members of Triangle Publications in 1974. To reflect the three-state slogan, the new owner of the television station decided to change its call signs to WOWK. On June 1, 1986, the association with the network was replaced and adopted CBS programming in their transmission slots. CBS 13 started working in collaboration with WTAJ in Lancaster, WBNG based in Binghamton, and WLYH for the area of Lancaster, and all of them have reconsidered their affiliation and remained with the CBS network.
