Sinclair Broadcast Group has the ownership right for the WSET channel. The transmission facilities of the channel are based on Langhorne Road of Lynchburg. The Transmitter tower of the station is based on Thaxton Mountain near Thaxton, Virginia.
On February 8, 1953 channel 13 start its operational services as WLVA-TV from another transmitter on Tobacco Row Mountain which is located west of Sweet Briar. Lynchburg Broadcasting Corporation has acquired the channel and is already the owner of radio station WLVA 580 AM. The transmitter site was reported acceptable during signal testing in the area of Charlottesville.
The channel was basically CBS affiliated and also carrying affiliations of ABC, NBC, and DuMont. Channel 13 was moved its technical facilities to Evington, Virginia in 1954. After getting the affiliation with NBC from WSLS channel 10, WLVA starts its broadcasting venture with ABC which become Virginia’s first television station with having the longest duration of affiliation with any network. The coverage area of channel 13 in its first 30 years was not properly reached to the western part because of the transmitter location which provides sufficient signals in the area of Lynchburg.
The Transmitter tower was 35 miles away from the downtown city and they filed an application for shifting channel transmitter near the city but the Federal Communications Commission refused those numerous applications from this channel because of signal interferences with WLOS in North Carolina and WOWK in West Virginia. Washington Star Company and Lynchburg Broadcasting start working together in 1965. Cross-media ownership rules which were suggested by the FCC force Allbritton to sell all non-television assets including radio stations in 1977.

The current channel name WSET-TV call letters were changed from WLVA in September 1977 under the Federal rules and regulations. Broadcasting issued in the western part of the market for WSET ABC was resolved from Allbritton in 1980. WSET moved all its transmitter facilities near Bedford on Thaxton Mountain after the Federal Communication Commission approval. The newly installed transmitter was fully functional from 1982 with having a clear signal coverage in most of the Roanoke area.
