Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired the WSTM along with WTVH 5 under the agreement of joint sales and shared service agreement with the founder Granite Broadcasting. On February 15, 1950, It start operational activities with having call letters of WSYR-TV.
The original owner of the network was Advance Publications which was already having radio stations of WSYR AM and FM. With this step it was the second television channel in the area of Syracuse and operational control was located on Kemper Building in the area of Syracuse.
WSYR television and radio station decided to shift its new offices on James Street. There was two television network which was not having NBC association beside WSYR did not consider an option to have secondary affiliation with ABC or DuMont. In 1957, WINR on-aired in the market, and WSYR tries to expand NBC programs for the area of Binghamton. A satellite station of Elmira is established by WSTM NBC 3 earlier known as WSYE and having under the possession of Nexstar Broadcasting Group.

Federal Communications Commission sanctioned having common ownership about television and radio station at once.
